The MÁV Gh Class Freight car project

MÁV Gh-car drawing minipic

The Gh Class freight car was a very typical Hungarian freight car type. Similar freight cars with trapeze cross section roof were not to find neither in Germany or Austria, just as reefer cars. The MÁV car can be observed on several old photos - even if not as a main object. There are a few surviving examples available, one in the yard of the museum stock repair shop in Budapest-Istvántelek, another one in a hidden corner of the Hatvan railway station. One slightly modified Gh car can be found in Slovakia. It seems this type of freight car can be an excellent candidate for model building.

As far as I know this car type was only manufactured in brake-less version, thus the model also do not need the small brake rig parts. The rather long wheelbase might cause troubles when running on uneven track, thus I designed one tilting wheelset, as it was applied already on the Jkh open freight car - also a rather long car. The hardest component was the roof. It is composed from two tilted flat sheets and a rounded top sheet. The other parts are similar to earlier freight cars and they were manufactured similarly.

I started to build two car models, as I do it with loco models. The Gh Class cars were rather similar, there are only subtle differences between earlier and later deliveries. One of my models represents an earlier version with long, straight bearing hornblocks and old type, two part bearing box. The second model is equipped with curved hornblocks and new, single part bearing box, as the prototype car in Istvántelek looks like.
