The idea to model the Class 327 came already while building
the Class 325 model
After building several models of small size steamer
prototypes I wanted to construct a bigger mainline loco.
Such loco, however, that was operating not only on the most
important lines, like the Classes 203 or
301, but also
performing fast passenger service on lighter mainlines.
The Class 328
was well known for me, a few of these locos
were still in service in the early 1970's. I do not like
this Class because of its unfortunate proportions. The
other choice is its predecessor, the Class 327, one of the
nicest Hungarian steam locos.
The 327 was a rather numerous Class, total 140 pieces were built before the WW1. This was the standard light fast train loco on the Hungarian Plain. After the WW1 only 25 pieces remained at MÁV but during WW2 a few additional engines remained in Hungarian territory. The Class was withdrawn in the mid. 1960's.
I do not remember to have seen these locos in service. One of them survived as mobile boiler, the 327,141. She was for long time in the scrapyard corner of the Istvántelke repair shop, but in 2007 steam enthusiasts helped her to move into the old shed - just below a hole in the shed roof. This loco is a good example to study some details but the cylinder blocks and yokes are missing, this made many headaches later.
I started to collect data, drawings and
pictures
already in 2006, but the first steps of the
construction happened only in 2008. As usual
I build two models and I try to model two
slightly different prototypes. This is not an
easy task with this Class as the 140 prototypes
were built in a rather short period, there was
no time to adapt serious construction
improvements. There are, however, some
well visible differences between the very
first and the later built locos.
I always choose such numbers for my loco models which
represent engines serving in Hungary during their whole lifetime.
Thus the early model's number will be 327,022 and the
later model will be numbered as 327,133.
