Pictures of MÁV Class 342 "Turkey" steamer
Old manufacturer's photo of the Class 342 prototype. Two prototypes were
built with copper firebox before the WW1. After WW1 none of them remained
in Hungary, thus the Class 342 became here a pure
Brotan-boiler Class.
Old manufacturer's photo of the Class 342, the version built in numbers by
MÁVAG/Budapest and Henschel/Kassel-Germany. You can recognize the
tapered boiler top: this shows the
Brotan-boiler.
The
only available Class 342 loco in Hungary, the 342,006.
It is on plinth in front of Vác station.
The MÁV "Nostalgia" comity refuses to
refurbish any locos with Brotan boiler,
as there is no technology available
to repair the Brotan boiler's tube firebox.
This is a Slovenian (former Yugoslavian) Class 17 loco, the former MÁV
342,164. Its flat top boiler shape shows clearly that it is equipped with
copper firebox. As originally only MÁV 342,001 and 002 were built
this way, one can suppose that the Yugoslavian railway, JZD has rebuilt the
Class 17 with new boiler. Probably they copied the boiler of the prototypes,
as one of those prototypes was given to Yugoslavia after WW1. The photo was
taken on the locomotive show on 7th July 1993 in Budapest.
The front of 342,006. Before WW2 the MÁV steamers did not have number
shields on the front.
The rear
part of the 342,006.
The front of 342,006. You can see the dual stage Westinghouse air pump. The
leading and trailing wheelsets were designed as Adams-axle. The leaf springs
above the footplate show this.
The front of the Slovenian Class 17 loco. The steam generator is mounted
differently than on the Hungarian ones. The photo was taken on the locomotive
show on 7th July 1993 in Budapest.
The left side of the longboiler and water tank
top. Such photos are important to build the model correctly. This picture
was taken on August 15th, 2002 in the Locomotive Museum in Budapest.
The cab from the top. The roof openings are invisible from the usual viewing
angle. The picture was taken on March 8th, 2003 in the shed of the Museum
stock workshop Istvántelke.

The rear part of the Slovenian Class 17. In Yugoslavia they mounted a toolbox
between the cab floor and the frame.
The valve gear of the Slovenian Class 17.
The reverse link of the Slovenian Class 17. It is rather hidden behind the
tank.
The rear driver and the injector of the 342,006.
The rear driver and the injector of the Slovenian Class 17. The picture shows
an earlier type of injector than those on the 342,006.
The trailing wheel of the 342,006. No toolbox, like on the Slovenian loco.
The firebox backhead of the Slovenian Class 17. This also shows a copper
firebox. To compare with a Brotan firebox, look at the
Class 328 firebox backhead.
All Hungarian Class 342s had
Brotan boiler.
The engineer's view from the Slovenian Class 17. On tank locos the view was
even limited by the water tank, even if its front part was slanted downwards.
The fireman's view from the Slovenian Class 17.
