Pictures of MÁV open freight car models

The ready made but unpainted model of a short open freight car,
MÁV Class Jkn. The screw coupler model is self made version.
The buffers are not yet the final ones, those will be old style slotted buffers.
The car will be equipped with NEM standard couplers too, in order to use
it on a layout woth other cars.

The side view of the car. It shows the characteristic appearence of the
short open freight cars.

This picture shows the front side of the car. The self-made model of
the screw coupler is better visible than on the previous picture.

|
Model of the MÁV Jkh-Class long open freight car. This was still built with
two-part friction bearing house, this is well visible on the model too.

The bottom view of the long open car frame. One axle, on the picture
the near one can tilt sideways. This helps the rather long wheelbase model
in tracking .

The new Jkn-Class open freight car with hand-braking equipment.
At these old cars the brakeman's cab and its platform
was mounted on the top of the sidewalls. As the Austrian-Hungarian
clearences were among the highest in Europe, the cab and the brakeman
still had enough headroom. To operate the brake the brakeman had to leave the cab.
The cab had no door, not a dream job for cold winter days.

The front view of the braking Jkn-Class open freight car model.
The steps are mounted on the front wall, as on the prototype.
You can observe the interesting shape of the cab.

The braking Jkn-Class open freight car model from the other side.
Here one can observe the platform mounted on the top of the sidewalls.
This model, as all newer car models, was made from nickel silver.

The frame of the braking Jkn-Class open freight car model.
This type of cars was still equipped with an asymmetric
brake rig. This was hard to model. The photo shows well,
one of the rods crosses below the axle! It was
important to make this rod with a hook at one end,
as for removing the wheelset it is necessary to open
the rod.
