The "Kandó" Electric loco was my first scratchbuilding project.
After 15 years of "dormant" state my interest for the railway modeling woke up. I purchased a German book about train models that contained several pictures of - mostly American - brass models. The idea came if I could build similar engines. First I performed some experiments to find out if soldering and other technologies could be applied to brass on the same way as I learned in the electronics technology. After getting satisfactory results I decided to build a "very Hungarian" loco, the Kandó electric.
Perhaps this was not a good decision. One should start with a simpler model, like a freight car or a brass structure. On the other side I wanted a real loco, to test if I can build a drivetrain too. I considered a steam locomotive would be a too difficult model to start, but a boxcab, even if with so many small detailing parts, could be perhaps easier.
The project was made easier by two things: I could buy drivers, originally PIKO drivers for the German BR41 steamer, that had the same diameter and same number of spokes like the Kandó electric. The other important circumstance was, that one original Kandó loco survived until now, it is on plinth at the Budapest Keleti Railway Station. Thus I could go there and take photographs. The overall dimensions of this loco were easy to find in several railway and model railway books.
In September 2000 this model has been awarded by a first prize in Category A1
(Scratch Built Motive Power)
on the 47th Annual Exhibition and Contest of the Hungarian Railroad Modelers' Association.
Here you can read about this engine.
